Most AP77 activities are described for Australian cities, so times on AP77 pages are usually local Australian time. If you are in Malaysia, whether you are planning a move, a visit or just following AP77 from home, it helps to know how those times compare with Malaysia Time (MYT, UTC+8). This AP77 guide explains the difference in plain English.
The quick answer
- Perth (Western Australia): same time as Malaysia, all year.
- Darwin (Northern Territory): 1.5 hours ahead of Malaysia, all year.
- Brisbane and the Gold Coast (Queensland): 2 hours ahead of Malaysia, all year.
- Adelaide (South Australia): 1.5 hours ahead in winter, 2.5 hours ahead during daylight saving.
- Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart: 2 hours ahead in winter, 3 hours ahead during daylight saving.
What is daylight saving?
Malaysia does not change its clocks. Several Australian states do: New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, Tasmania and South Australia move their clocks forward one hour from the first Sunday in October until the first Sunday in April. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not. That is why the gap between Kuala Lumpur and Sydney is 3 hours in December but only 2 hours in July.
Worked examples
- An activity at 7:00 pm in Sydney in November is 4:00 pm in Malaysia.
- The same 7:00 pm start in Sydney in June is 5:00 pm in Malaysia.
- A 10:00 am outing in Brisbane is always 8:00 am in Malaysia.
- A 6:30 pm meet-up in Perth is 6:30 pm in Malaysia, too.
Tips for avoiding mix-ups
- Check which city an activity is in before converting the time; Australia has several time zones.
- Add events to your phone calendar with the city’s time zone so it converts automatically.
- Around early October and early April, double-check times, because the gap changes overnight.
- If an event page lists a time zone label, such as AEST or AEDT, trust that label.
Useful labels
AWST is Perth time. ACST/ACDT covers Adelaide and Darwin (Adelaide uses ACDT in summer). AEST/AEDT is used on the east coast; AEDT applies only in states with daylight saving. MYT is Malaysia Time.
